i pledge

The aim of this interactive installation was to draw attention to how the school, where I work, tackles climate change. Most importantly, I wanted to give pupils some understanding of today’s environmental challenges, and show that by acting together they can change the world for the better. The event coincided with the last day of the COP26 talks on 12 November 2021.

I wanted to create an interactive art installation along the school driveway for children, parents and staff to view and participate in. The project involved the support and collaboration of the whole school community and was a huge success: there was a real buzz in the air as families and staff exchanged ideas on what changes we as a community could make.

KS1 produced informative class posters on the causes and consequences of climate change, the EYFS children decorated large COP26 lettering to promote the event, and the Year 2 ‘Eco-Warriors’ designed a leaflet.

We displayed the school’s climate action pledges alongside staff pledges as a starting point for pupils and parents to reflect on, and share, their own pledges for tackling climate change. We hung recycled cardboard Pledge boards on the school fence and set up tables with resources for families to write and attach their pledges to the boards.

We also staged a climate emergency protest involving all year groups. Pupils used their creative skills to design banners and placards for their protests. KS1 led a protest march around Herne Hill while the EYFS children protested in the playground.
